Languages, Literature & Culture
Central to all international and area studies efforts at our university is the study of the languages, literature and cultures of world regions. Duke students, faculty and staff along with members of the community can take advantage of a wide range of opportunities for exploring the cultures of world regions.
As a major research university, Duke has invested significant resources in developing language programs. The Perkins Library at Duke offers a comprehensive guide to Literature & Languages as a valuable resource to scholars.
Duke currently offers courses of instruction in approximately 25 languages. They include Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Pashto, Persian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. The Office of Pre-major Advising assists undergraduate students with selection of a foreign language and several schools provide additional language instruction.
Given the culturally diverse makeup of our constituents, Duke also offers technology services in a number of foreign languages. Duke is committed to hiring and retaining the finest scholars and teachers in languages, literature and culture.
